Đuro Kosanović rođen je 6. maja 1917. godine u selu Jasenak kod Ogulina, u siromašnoj zemljoradničkoj porodici.

Nakon završene osnovne škole pomagao je ocu u poljskim radovima i povremeno radio u pilani. Tokom Aprilskog rata, bio je zarobljen kod Doboja. Kao zarobljenik je upućen u Nemačku, ali je uspeo da pobegne i vratio se u rodno selo.

Učesnik Narodnooslobodilačke borbe je od 1941. godine. Učestvovao je u pripremama za oružani ustanak i nakon početka ustanka, otišao u partizanski logor. Član Komunističke partije Jugoslavije postao je u maju 1942. godine.

U leto 1942. postao je komandir čete, a u jesen iste godine i komandant bataljona u Šestoj primorsko-goranskoj brigadi.

Poginuo je 19. oktobra 1943. godine u sukobu sa Nemcima, upavši u njihovu zasedu.

Ukazom Prezidijuma Narodne skupštine Federativne Narodne Republike Jugoslavije, 5. jula 1951. godine, proglašen je za narodnog heroja.
